Do you know how to survive in extreme climatic conditions?

Finnair Flight Academy's Arctic Survival course gives you the knowledge needed for survival and leadership in extremely cold conditions in a post-emergency landing or crash situation. By practicing hands-on training you will learn the principles of survival in Polar Regions as required by the aviation authorities.

The course is targeted to experienced pilots, cabin crew and authority representatives.


  • Knowledge of fundamental survival skills in extreme cold weather such as prevention of hypothermia and understanding of psychological aspects of emergency operations in very cold weather
  • Experience of survival in polar regions as required by the aviation authorities to deepen instructors’ teaching capability
  • Knowledge and experience in survival leadership roles and responsibilities


This 4-day course starts from Finnair Flight Academy facility at Helsinki Airport. During the first day the participants will take the flight to city of Ivalo (EFIV) in the Lapland region of Finland and will continue with ground transportation to the course site located beyond the Arctic Circle. During the second and third days, the participants will learn and achieve hands-on experience on first aid, leadership, CRM, shelter preparation, emergency signaling, survival in the snow and use of aircraft material in survival to mention some of the topics. The participants will also have a chance to spend one night outside in controller, realistic survival situation. The day four will conclude the course at the training site and will include closing & feedback session and flight back to Helsinki Airport where the participants are ready to continue their onward journey back to home.

The course fee includes flights between Helsinki - Ivalo - Helsinki, ground transportation in Ivalo, accommodation, food and refreshments at the training site, training material & equipment and outer clothing for the participants.

In addition to the invaluable experience and extensive hands-on training gained during the course each participant will receive a Training Certificate from Finnair Flight Academy as a proof of completion of the training course.
